Introduction to the Biggest Lysol Fan

Hi!! My name is Megan Szymanski and I am a sophomore from Oklahoma City, OK. I'm currently studying Chemical Biosciences and Letters, with a Business minor. This combination allows me to pursue my wide-ranging interests. From a young age, I have wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Due to travel and just involvement in my community, I developed a love for the humanities. Different time periods, art movements, literary styles, and everything along those lines are so interesting!! I am taking Latin in the fall, and I am excited to learn this language and hopefully be able to read some of old Roman texts.

Additionally, I have so many wide ranging interests. A long list of my favorite things include: my friends and family, my sweet dogs and cat (pictured below), bible journaling, bookstores, writing letters, reading, traveling and travel photography, music, sports (OU football!!!!!), running, tennis, hammocking, hiking, Mamma Mia, cereal, popcorn, Harry Potter, cereal, flowers, sweatshirts, candles, baking, timed photos, intentional conversations, planners, cards and board games, and Hallmark movies! I know that list is so long, but it really is so descriptive of who I am, and the people and places and things that bring me so much joy.

During quarantine, I was so impressed by everyone's creativeness and willingness to make the most of the situation. I took a couple classes and worked this summer, so I ended up being pretty busy which is GREAT for me! I love being on the go and meeting new people and doing different things. At the end of quarantine, I started making masks because I was bored. It was really fun because I had not used my sewing machine since I was 12 (when I made a quilt and some pillow covers), and I really enjoyed the feeling of being creative again.

Now about the weird title ... I have a weird love of Lysol. Last year in my dorm room (which you all know are pretty gross), I used so much lysol and went through about 4 cans a semester. So you can imagine my dismay when Covid hit and there were shortages across the nation of Lysol. However, my family and I have started finding some more and it has made me happy during this strange time.

  1. Oh wow, Megan, I just have to say: Latin. In all-caps even: LATIN. I used to be a Latin teacher and I still have a Latin blog because once you get addicted to Latin, it's hard to give it up, ha ha. You've probably already figured out from the mindset cats in the announcements blog that I like playing with cat memes, so behold: the Latin LOLCats (link) (and Aesop's fables too... that's kind of my academic speciality). So I will hope that you have tons of fun in your Latin class: EUGAE! (which is Latin for YAY!). And your pet pictures are so adorable...... so maybe you will write some stories in which they can be starring characters this semester. Or perhaps a story about the epic warfare between some heroine wielding Lysol and her microbial foes. Anyway, it sounds like this class will be able to connect up with your interests and creative impulses in all kinds of ways, and I hope you will have fun in here... and in Latin also! :-)

  2. Megan, your animals are absolutely adorable! Also, that's pretty funny that you went through so much lysol, but I absolutely don't blame you because the dorms are something else entirely. After my freshmen year, I hustled out of there super quick and I don't miss it in the least. Anyway, I wish you the best in your Latin classes because learning a new language is difficult. I took German three semesters and it's awesome, but I can't deny that it was a trip in those classes. So, my best advice is just keep reading/talking Latin and you'll do great!

  3. Hi my name is Addison! I love your dogs, in fact I love all dogs but I have a soft spot for pittbulls, great danes, and corgis. I love Harry Potter as well, I am sure there are some great conversations about it. My Mimi is a seamstress and I enjoy sewing even though I am not skilled at it. I also think it is great that you are contributing to the community by making masks.

  4. Hi Megan! Your pets are so adorable. I actually have to applaud you for your obsession to Lysol! It's probably pretty beneficial now with the pandemic and needing to keep things clean and healthy. I have a heart condition, so I have to take extra precautions since I am high-risk, so I understand the Lysol obsession completely. I hope you have tons of fun with Latin! I actually took a few semesters of Choctaw for my foreign language requirement, and I had so much fun learning it.

  5. Hi Megan! I think I know your brother (Brett), as I'm also a tour guide and worked with him last year! (and now that I've said that, I'm desperately hoping not to be wrong, that would be so awkward...) Honestly, I really relate to the love of Lysol. I worked at a museum and we used lysol to clean all the toys and things in the children's exhibit at the end of the day, and it was one of my favorite things to do!
You said you love bookstores, so which is your favorite: new or used bookstores? I personally love the smell of used bookstores, but there's also no feeling quite as good as opening a new book for the first time.
    Good luck with the semester!

    1. Hi Leah! Yes, my brother was a tour guide! And I have to say... used bookstores all the way. Nothing beats books stacked to the ceiling!!

  6. Hi Megan! Your major is so interesting and unique, I love how you are able to combine all of your interests into your major and minor. Your dogs and cat are adorable! I enjoyed looking at the pictures of them. I have been wanting to re watch all the Harry Potter movies because it has been years since I have seen one! I recently just got a hammock and I have yet to try it out on campus. Do you have a spot where you like to hammock? That is so funny about the lysol! I have never seen a can in store to this day because they are always sold out and I desperately need some!

I hope you have a great semester!

  7. Hi Megan!

First, your pets are too cute. It's not fair.

Also, I love that you have a wide range of interests! I often find myself at a loss when asked what my hobbies/interests are because I have so few that I truly take the time to engage with. I also love Mamma Mia (I geeked hard about it in my intro post) and Hallmark movies are a staple around my home. I don't have cable normally, because who wants to pay for that, but around this time each year, I FIND A WAY to watch Hallmark movies. They are just so cozy. I think it is great that you want to learn Latin, because as someone who has dabbled in it, I really just don't have the patience! Ha! I applaud you!

  8. Megan,

    Your corgi is ridiculously cute!

I have a journaling Bible. I haven't done a lot in it, but I have several pages in 1 Corinthians that I've journaled on. I have a lot of ideas pinned to a board in Pinterest. Now that I know how well gesso works on book pages, I kinda want to do a lot of weird book journaling. I bet I could do some cool art in a Dracula book. I'd love to see some of the pages you have done!

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. Hi Megan! First of all I love all of your pets, but your new corgi is adorable! I also have a love of animals and Harry Potter! In fact, I have a cat named Ollivander! And I totally agree with you about the dorms- they're nasty! I was so glad to only have to live there for one year. Since you mentioned that you enjoy reading, what is your favorite genre? I also love reading and enjoy learning about other people's favorites! I hope your semester is great!

  11. Hi Megan. Your pets are all so cute and your corgi puppy is to die for! I want a corgi so bad after I graduate college! I have a cat named Leo right now haha! I too and also a huge Harry Potter fan! I was the kid who read all the books and would nerd out on every new movie release. Thanks for sharing your funny humor and sweet personality! Good luck and stay safe!

  12. Hi Megan! I love your pets, I am so happy you included pictures for us. I also enjoy reading and got into making masks during this long strange time. Did you find a favorite style of mask? I made a bunch of the kind of standard pleated masks because they go so fast. They aren't my favorite but they were great for donating!

  13. Hi Megan!

I love the pets, seeing everybody's pets is my favorite part about reading everybody's intro! My mom is also obsessed with Lysol.. and has been ever since I remember! She FREAKED when covid struck and there was a huge shortage. Luckily for you both, Lysol is back on the shelves.

  14. Hi Megan!
First of all your pets are adorable! The picture of your dog on campus is the cutest thing I have ever seen. Thats so cool that you picked up the hobby of making masks during quarantine, there definitely cannot be enough masks made in this world. I was freaked out too when there was no lysol either but very happy to find that it is being restocked!

  15. Hey Megan! I loved reading your intro, you seem insanely sweet and so talented! I am right there with you on having a love for being on the go. If I am not doing anything, I feel like something is wrong, so having a full schedule to keep me occupied is how I like it! Also, your love for Lysol is definitely not something I would've expected, but in a way weird way, I get it. Hope you have a great rest of your semester and are stocked up on Lysol again!

  16. Hey Megan,
I really enjoyed reading your intro! Thank you so much for sharing photos of your sweet pets, its always my favorite thing to hop on and see! I am amazed at the wide range of college majors, if you stick with it you will have such a well rounded education. I loved reading your story about photography and I cannot wait to read more of your stuff!

  17. Megan, I liked reading your post and I think we have a lot in common! I'm also a Letters major and had to take Latin. I hope that you enjoy it a little more than I did - I never quite got the hang of all the declensions. And while I'm not the biggest Lysol fan I can relate nevertheless because I am a big fan of Clorox wipes. It's been almost impossible to find a can of those bad-boys over the past few months! Your dogs are super cute as well, thanks for sharing the pictures. I hope you're enjoying this course so far!

  18. Hi Megan! I loved reading your intro! It's crazing because we have so much in common! I also have a huge love of writing all things, Harry Potter, cereal, especially intentional conversations, and bible journaling! I wish I had any kind of skills in science things like you but sadly that is not a talent I possess! I'm excited to continue to get to know you better this semester!

  19. Hi Megan :)
Your two majors are awesome! Letters and chemical biosciences, oh jeez, that's intimidating to me, but I think it's wonderful you're so passionate about both. I hope by the time you graduate all this pandemic stuff will be over, and you'll get a proper senior year and graduation!
Your pets are all so cute!! I know they're going to stay with you through thick and thin for many years to come.

  20. Hi Megan!
I think it's cool you want to enter the medical field, the world always needs more people working in health!
Also, your pets are totally adorable!
I love your inclusion of that nice little list of things that you enjoy, it really helps to paint a picture of what you're like, especially when paired with listing some of your interests up above!

  21. Hi Megan!
I love that your interests are so wide ranged. When I saw Harry Potter in your interests I got excited. I love love Harry Potter. I lost count on how many times I've rewatched the movies. I actually never read the books, but finally did so during quarantine. I'm so glad I did. I read through it very quickly and felt like I needed to immediately reread it right after haha. I'm a pre-PA student so I'm on a similar route to your pre-med one.

  22. Hi Megan!
I enjoyed reading your intro. I think it's cool that you are studying chemical bioscience and letter. By your hearing what you are doing as major, i can say that you must be very smart and plus you have a minor in business. I also like pictures of your cats and dogs. They look very cute. Looks like you got a wide range of interest. I wonder how you find time to take care of all of that. Loved your page!

  23. Hi Megan! I think that its very interesting you are double majoring, especially in letters. What drew you to that field? I love Harry Potter as well!! There's just not a limit to how many times I can watch those movies. Your pets are adorable!! I love the picture of the doggo in front of the biz. Good luck this semester and everything in the future!
