Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

The Three Roses

Story source: The Key of Gold by Josef Baudis (1922).

Image Information: Basilisk by Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747-1822).

- three daughters; one of them always asked for three roses when the mother went to a market in the next town

^^ what's the next town? be more specific in my retelling; also go into more details about what the girls want in order to make the story longer and more enjoyable

  - the mother forgot about the roses for the third daughter, but saw a palace garden on her way home full of roses, and decided to take three of them

^^ where is the palace? what does it look like? how big was the garden? just roses? or other flowers also?

- a basilisk came and demanded that the mother give her daughter in exchange for the roses

^^ what other animal/thing could I change the basilisk into? I need to make sure it's something that would be terrifying

- Mary (we just now get the first daughter's name) went to the basilisk and nursed him for three hours every day

^^ what did this "nursing" look like? maybe she'd be trapped there longer, more like the Beauty and the Beast we know. what about adding back in some of the inanimate objects that come to life?

- on the third day, the basilisk wanted Mary to cut his head off; she refused, but eventually did it and then he turned into a serpent and then he turned into a beautiful youth and they got married

^^ what made Mary change her mind about cutting off the basilisk's head? why did she not hesitate the second time?

^^ everyone loves a good love story - add more details about the wedding ... did Mary's family come? was there anyone else in the palace besides the basilisk?
