Reading Notes: Week 3 (Cupid and Psyche, Part B)

Venus and the Goddesses
- Psyche longed to find Cupid, and he laid in his mom's chamber in pain from his scorched shoulder
- Venus was told that Cupid was burned, and she grew angry 
- she becomes even angrier when she figures out it was Psyche; and shouted at her son
- she said she'd break his quiver and blunt his arrows
- Venus runs into Juno and Ceres and asks them to find psyche
- they tried to defend Cupid

Psyche's Prayer
- Psyche continued to wander, seeking her husband
- Ceres found her, and told Psyche that Venus was looking for her to punish her
- then she saw Juno
- both goddesses told her they wished they could help her, but they can't offend and upset Venus

Venus and Mercury
- Venus sought for Psyche in the heavens, and demanded the services of Mercury
- Mercury rushed to comply with Venus' wish of finding Psyche

Venus and Psyche
- Venus finally gets Psyche and she was flogged and tortured in other ways
- Venus ripped her clothes and called for wheat, barley, beans, etc. and made Psyche sort them into their own kinds
- ants condemned the goddess's cruelty and helped sort the piles

Psyche's Next Task
- Venus recognized that Psyche did not do the work by herself and gave her bread for supper
- a simple reed taught Psyche how to save  herself
- her success at the second task still frustrated Venus

The Third Task
- again, Jupiter's royal eagle (Ganymede) helped Psyche

The Jar of Beauty
- she took the little jar back to Venus, who was still not happy
- she asked her to take the jar to the underworld herself
- she received advice and help though, to take the shortest way to Pluto's palace

The Sleep of the Dead
- Stygian sleep
- Cupid found Psyche, wiped away the sleep, and returned it to its jar

The Wedding Feast
- Jupiter calls a wedding for Cupid and Psyche
- gives Psyche a cup of ambrosia so she may be immortal
- the daughter was called Pleasure

Lucius and the Robbers
- this was the tale the old woman told the girl captive
- the robbers moved along the road and stopped in a cave

The Escape
- Lucius thought he was going to die
- so he broke the halter and ran as fast as he could
- he kicked the old lady 
- and he also rescued the girl
