Reading Notes: Brer Rabbit (Part A, Week 7)

1. Brer Rabbit and the Calamus Root
* Brer Fox just wanted to catch Brer Rabbit, but Brer Rabbit was doing everything not to get caught
* Fox told Rabbit that he saw Bear the other day and that he wasn't being neighborly
* then Rabbit asked Fox if he would take dinner to him tomorrow night
* Mr. and Miss rabbit got up early the next day to fix a great dinner
* little Rabbit ran in and said Mr. Fox is coming
* so they sat around and waited for Fox, but he didn't come
* escaped him by getting calamus root


2. The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story
* Rabbit fooled Fox with the calamus root
* Fox got some tar and turpentine to make a tar-baby contraption
* Rabbit came down the road, and tries to talk to the tar-baby
* Fox watched, but kept laying low
* Rabbit kept talking and was getting upset
* then Fox came forward and rolled on the ground and laughed

3. Why Mr. Possum Loves Peace
* Possum called for Coon, and ate dinner 
* Dog came around and sailed into the two of them
* then Dog made himself scarce
* Coon didn't reply to Possum's greeting the next time he saw him

4. How Mr. Rabbit Was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox
* Fox said he would get Rabbit
* Rabbit was humble and just asked not to get thrown in a brier-patch
* Fox said he'd have to drown Rabbit
* but Rabbit said he'd be skinned before being thrown in patch
* Rabbit watched from afar and Fox knew he had been swapped

5. Mr. Fox is "Outdone" by Mr. Buzzard
* Mr. Turkey Buzzard was guarding Rabbit's hollow
* Fox grabbed an axe and hit Rabbit's tree
* Buzzard said Rabbit was in there, and Fox grabbed him 
* Fox realized he was made a fool of

6. Mr. Wolf Makes a Failure
* Fox feels bad and is mad about Rabbit
* Wolf looked suspicious
* Fox and Wolf came up with a plan to trap Rabbit 
* Wolf said he'd fool him, by saying Fox died that morning
* Rabbit did not believe it, so he went to visit and Fox lifted his foot when Rabbit was there and he ran out

7. Mr. Fox Tackles O;d Man Tarrypin
* Terrapin heard Fox coming and Fox acted polite
* Terrapin is saying Fox doesn't know what trouble is
* Terrapin got out of the fire my taking it, said the fire scorched his back
* Terrapin begged and begged Fox not to drown him and then begged him to burn him if he was going to die

8. The Awful Fate of Mr. Wolf
* Wolf, instead of minding his own business, got into partnership with Fox
* Rabbit wouldn't leave home; and built Wolf a straw house but it was torn down
* rabbit got mad, and built a plank house with rock foundations so he could have peace and quiet
* made a hole in the cellar so the little Rabbits could hide
* Rabbit was about to call on Miss Coon when he heard a big fuss, and Wolf ran in the door
* Rabbit agreed to hide him
* but, he ended up trapping him and held a jubilee with their neighbors
